The Pelican Brief.
1993.
Slick adaptation of John Grisham's novel stars Julia Roberts as a law student who comes up with a far-fetched conspiracy theory about the death of a Supreme Court judge. An ambitious journalist (Denzel Washington) comes to her aid when her brief turns out to be accurate, putting her life in danger. Good production value and an impressive supporting cast (Sam Shepard, Hume Cronyn, J.T. Walsh) should have helped make this a better film, but there's an emptiness at its core, due both to uneven pacing and to the absence of tension between Roberts and Washington. In the book they're lovers, but that's absent here, leaving a hole at the heart of the proceedings.
