Ready To Wear (Prêt-à-Porter).
1994.
Director Robert Altman's multilayered examinations of professional and cultural milieus range from the richly textured Nashville and the savagely satirical The Player to the toothless mockery of H.E.A.L.T.H. and Ready To Wear. Originally titled PrOt-a-Porter, Altman's breezy overview of the Parisian fashion scene is as dismayingly shallow and empty as the institution it mocks. Utilizing his by-now-formulaic methodology of intersecting story lines, Altman betrays a casual contempt for his characters and their pursuits that makes it hard for the filmmaker even to feign any genuine involvement. Only its sense of the grotesque keeps the film from being a total snoozathon.
